Valentin Codoiu was born in 1955 in Coroisânmărtin, Mureș County, Romania. He studied at the Art High School in Cluj-Napoca and later at the Institute of Fine Arts “Nicolae Grigorescu” in Bucharest, where he graduated in Painting in 1979 under the guidance of renowned Romanian painter Corneliu Baba.
Codoiu is a member of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania. Alongside his work as a painter, he has had a long career as a stage designer, working with theatres and opera houses in Romania and abroad.
His painting is strongly rooted in colour, texture and the physical process of working with paint. He often takes simple, familiar subjects as a starting point, allowing them to develop through colour, light, gesture and composition. The subject is often less important than the painting itself and the possibilities offered by the medium.
His work reflects a long and sustained engagement with painting, shaped by his experience as both a visual artist and a stage designer. Colour, material and gesture remain central to his practice, while his subjects range from figures and landscapes to still lifes and everyday scenes.
