Marius Dan Ghenescu was born in 1969 in Hunedoara, Romania. He studied at the Art High School in Târgu Mureș and later graduated in Painting from the “Ion Andreescu” Academy of Visual Arts in Cluj-Napoca in 1997. He went on to complete a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and received his PhD in Visual Arts from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca in 2011.
Ghenescu is a member of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania and has been teaching at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca since 2000. He is currently a university lecturer at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, where he teaches drawing, colour, composition, iconography and other traditional and contemporary art practices. Alongside his teaching, he has been involved in artistic and research projects exploring the relationship between visual art, spirituality and religious tradition.
His artistic practice brings together painting, drawing and graphic work, with a particular interest in the human figure and the spiritual dimension of everyday experience. His work often moves between the visible and the suggested, using simplified forms, fragments and carefully considered compositions to explore ideas of identity, memory, faith and existence.
Ghenescu’s approach is also influenced by the tradition of religious art and iconography, although his work is not limited to strictly religious subjects. Instead, he uses elements of this tradition alongside a contemporary visual language, creating works that leave space for reflection and personal interpretation.
Ghenescu lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, where he continues to combine his artistic practice with teaching and research.
